The Classics

Friday, February 25, 2011

If I were to describe my style as of lately, I would say classic and traditional. I am obsessed with timeless, elegant fashion. Ok, not even just in fashion. Timeless and elegant everything. From decor, to fashion, to something as simple as etiquette.
I cannot wait to roam the streets of Europe, looking for antiques, wearing a chic dress, stopping at cafes for a cappuccino, and taking glorious pictures.
Yea, that's my dream.
A couple of weeks ago I came across this wonderful photography blog: From Me to You
I was reminded about this blog again last week, when a friend of mine sent me a link.
There is an area on the blog titled "Daily Outfit" and it is fantastic. There are series of photographs channeling different classic Hollywood icons. The pictures have me practically drooling.

Are you inspired yet?
Lady-like poise, class, grace, and sophistication never go out of style.

Hmmmm...

Wednesday, February 23, 2011

Yes it's true, I've been running out of things to blog about.
There hasn't been a whole lot going on in the Cravinho household lately, just preparation for future endeavors.
Do any of you go through periods of limbo before big life changes? Where you have something exciting coming up, and you are just sort of trying to pass the time until that happens? It's almost like life is at a standstill, and your just waiting for things to pick up again.
I'm not a very patient person, so this is basically driving me nuts.
I think I need to focus on the present more, but the future is just so much more exciting!
So this is my goal: To enjoy the time we have left here in the states (and this horrible town in Georgia where there is nothing to do).
I think I need to plan more weekend adventures. We went out of town the past 2 weekends, and now February is almost over!
I need some new projects too...
Hmmmmmm...
:)

Four Day Weekend

Tuesday, February 22, 2011

It's been a long weekend, and I'm trying to get back into the swing of things!
I have a hard time snapping back into my weekly routine when my hubby is home.
I'm trying to play catch up with all the blogs I follow, and our house is a disaster (as it is after most long weekends).
Jacob had Friday off so we headed to Savannah, Georgia. Unfortunately we didn't take any pictures!!! I'm pretty disappointed by that, but oh well. I really loved the city. We wandered around the historic district, visited a few museums, and ate wonderful food. It was a lovely getaway. I would like to visit again before we leave, it's only about a 2 hour drive from where we live. We went on a tour through the Owens-Thomas House, which was built in the 1800s. It was neat to see, but a bit less impressive because of our upcoming move to Italy, where a building or home from that time period is really not a big deal.
We spent the rest of the weekend just relaxing, nothing too exciting.
This week is already flying by, and next week it will be March!
Can you believe it? Where does the time go?

My first MilSpouse Friday Fill-In

Friday, February 18, 2011

I am SO excited to be participating in my first Military Spouse Friday Fill-In!
Head over to Wife of a Sailor to read more!

1. What is your favorite MilSpouse blog (not including Wife of a Sailor who we all love, or your own)? submitted by Our Crazy Life (Wifey note: whaaaat? You can’t say my blog? No fun! LOL, just kidding)

I have found SO many great blogs lately! Adventures in Italia, JSKBT, Uncork and Unwined.... See the blogs I follow for more! I could spend all day listing my faves...

2. What are your favorite perks about your s/o being deployed (we all know there are perks)? submitted by Ramblings of a Marine Wife

Watching allllll the trashy TV that my heart desires :) WITHOUT judgment!

3. How long did you date your before getting engaged? Married? submitted by Utterly Chaotic

We dated for almost a year before getting engaged, and it was a little over a year after that until we got married. BUT we've known each other since we were 11... Kind of crazy.

4. What do you think your s/o would do if he/she wasn’t in the military? submitted by Adventures of M-Squared
Oh my goodness, he has soooo many dreams and aspirations. Before joining he was pursuing a degree in engineering, so I think he would be continuing with that if he hadn't chosen the military life.

The matching game

Thursday, February 17, 2011

Ok, have you noticed that over time you and your significant other seriously start to rub off on each other?

Every time I see my mother she points out that Jacob and I are dressed a like. I always get defensive and ask her what on earth she's talking about. We most certainly are not dressed a like! I mean once in a while our color scheme matches, but we just happen to like the same colors. It's not like we plan it or anything. Neither of us ever even notice it until it's pointed out by someone else.
Then I started thinking... Does my mother have a point?
I was glancing through some photos of us... Sure, sometimes we coordinate... But who doesn't?

None of this freaked me out that much, but then my mom brought up our honeymoon pictures. She asked if I purposely bought Jacob a shirt to match all of my sundresses. I had no idea what she was talking about, until I looked at the pictures again.
Ummm... That's normal right?
I swear we never plan to coordinate, we never even notice it the majority of the time.
I blame my husband. I'm always dressed before he is.
Does anyone else find that they unintentionally match their spouses (a lot)?

It's starting to feel like spring...

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

It's finally beginning to feel like spring! I hope this weather sticks around, it's supposed to be in the high 70s in Savannah on Friday!
These pics were taken this past summer in Oregon at the Saturday Market in Portland. They make me think of summer :)
Wishing everyone a sunny Wednesday from here in Georgia!

Looking like a long week...

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

You know those weeks where you have a to-do list that's a mile long, and each day you feel like you are getting no where on it?
I think it's going to be one of those weeks.
I don't know if it's because we were out of town all weekend and now I'm playing catch up or what. Or perhaps starting a business and trying to get ready to move to another country at the same time is finally starting to catch up with me.
I went in to apply for my no-fee passport last week, only to find out that I have to get medically cleared before I can be issued the passport. So now we have another appointment next week for me to get medical clearance. Then once I receive my no-fee passport I can apply for my regular tourist passport (and I'm sure by that time we will have to pay to get it expedited so that I will have it before we leave). Getting military things accomplished can be so frustrating sometimes. BUT it's all worth it, and I am still extremely excited.
We were supposed to go to North Carolina this weekend to visit some of my girlfriends (and explore Wilmington), but things happened and plans have changed. Since we are unable to go this weekend, and Jake still has Friday off, we decided to spend the day in Savannah. Neither of us has ever been, and it's the one place in Georgia that I have really wanted to visit. Hopefully the weather will stay nice, and we will get to enjoy a sunny day in Savannah :)
Of course now that I have said this, something will surely happen that will prevent us from going.
I'm off to make some chicken tacos for dinner, and then hopefully tackle a bit more of my to-do list!

Happy Valentine's Day (A Day Late)

So this was supposed to have been posted yesterday, but I must have gotten distracted and forgot to hit "publish post." Anyways luckily blogger automatically saves all drafts, so lets just pretend that it's yesterday for a second...

Happy Valentine's day!

A heart shaped breakfast for my Valentine
This year Valentine's day came a little early for me. On Saturday the hubs announced that he was going to take me on a little shopping spree. I honestly can't thing of a better gift :)
I'm not sure if this is normal, but my husband is one of my favorite people to shop with. He holds my purse, my bags, gives me opinions on everything, and knows exactly what I like and what looks good on me (all while being a manly-man, of course).
He's such a trooper.
I think the items that I got the most excited about were:
Jack Rogers Sandels
J.Crew chino shorts (I got a variety of colors)
Hey, it's hard to find good shorts that fit well.
I also found some super cute sundresses, a variety of cute tops, skirts, and whatnot.
I was sadly let down by Lilly Pulitzer. At both Bloomies and the Lilly store in Winter Park they had very few sizes in any of their spring merchandise. I suppose I'll just have to settle with ordering online.

Tonight I'm cooking dinner for the hubs, but unfortunately the dessert I made (strawberry cheesecake) doesn't seem to be turning out as I had planned. It doesn't look quite right, but perhaps it will taste good?

Greetings from Orlando

Friday, February 11, 2011

Whew, we finally made it to Orlando by about 10:30 last night.
The hubs got off early yesterday, which was awesome. He had already decided that morning that I was going to be the one to drive the whole way. His reasoning? He had to work all day of course (mind you, yesterday his shop had a "mandatory fun day." Dodgeball is REAL hard work, right?). I spent the day packing for the both of us, cleaning the house, and working on our business that were in the processes of starting up. Apparently that's not work? Hmmmm.
Anyways I'm pretty excited to be at my parents house for the weekend. The trip is part business and part pleasure. We always have such a blast with my mom and dad.
So I have this goal and I need your help with it.
I want to get to 50 followers.
I know there are people who read this blog who are not yet followers.
SO if you enjoy my blog, please become a follower!
I promise you it will get more interesting in the upcoming months. I mean were moving to Italy for goodness sake.
:)

Cookies for your Valentine

Wednesday, February 9, 2011

I was feeling festive yesterday and decided to bake some heart-shaped sugar cookies in the spirit of Valentine's day.

I love these cookies because the recipe is delicious, and all you need is a variety of cookie-cutters and your set for every holiday.
The recipe for these cookies came from my mother (I believe she got it from my grandmother) who swears this is the best sugar cookie recipe she's encountered.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 cup butter
1 egg
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda

Directions:
Mix sugar and butter.
Add egg and Vanilla, mix thoroughly.
Add flour and baking soda.
Refrigerate dough for 2-3 hours.
Preheat oven to 375.
Roll out dough, cut out shapes, and bake for 7-8 minutes (until lightly brown).
Then have fun decorating!

My favorite recipe for frosting is:
2 tbsp heavy whipping cream
1 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
Add food coloring as you wish.

These cookies are simple, cute, and fun. I think so far I've made them for Halloween and Christmas.
We are heading to Orlando this weekend to see my parents, so luckily I have someone to give these cookies away to. These days I try not to bake any goodies unless I have someone to pawn them off on. I have an intense sugar tooth, and my husband doesn't eat a lot of sweets. SO guess who's tummy they all end up in. Yup.
Happy Wednesday!

Keep Calm and Carry On

Tuesday, February 8, 2011

I think that I can finally say that I am back to normal and there are no more issues with the dreaded wisdom teeth! I felt like SUCH a wuss for having such a tough time recovering from something so minor, but it really kicked my behind.
There's not a whole lot going on in the Cravinho household. Were basically really excited for our Italy move in a couple of months. Well, for me it's more like excitement mixed with worries (what else is new).
I like to plan things. It's just how I am. If I can't plan, I feel totally out of control.
Yea, my husband finds this quite hilarious.
His motto is "you can plan all you want but don't plan on it." This is the kind of attitude you need when your dealing with the military. I've been trying my best to adapt since the moment we started dating.
Anyways, this is going to be a first move for the both of us. The hubs has been stationed at Robins AFB since he got out of tech school years ago. You can bet that I'm constantly looking at the Aviano website. From check lists to packing tips, I want to plan for as much as I possibly can! We have an appointment with the passport office tomorrow to get my no-fee passport (and I imagine whatever else I might need. I don't even have a regular passport).
We also discovered that our car needs to be shipped out almost 2 months before we leave! Right now we only have one car, what are we supposed to drive around during that time?
I'm also currently obsessed with the AHRN website. I LOVE looking at all the possible places where we could live! Last night I found a little (well not so little) pink house that I love. We've heard that it's better to live a little farther away from base and more in the city (Pordenone). But, I get confused because it seems as though there are a ton of different areas within Pordenone.
I'm just ready to get over there now. The more time I have before we leave, the more I'm going to think about things and stress out. Just toss me over there without giving me a chance to think about it :) My mind is my own worst enemy.
For those of you who have done this before, any advice? What did you wish you knew while you were in the process of moving overseas?
For now I'm just going to try to keep calm and carry on.

I'm hoping the laid-back Italian culture rubs off on me a bit :)

Be My Valentine?

Monday, February 7, 2011

Valentine's day is just around the corner!
This year I decided to get crafty and make my own Valentine's.

These cards are sooooo simple, it's amazing what you can do with a variety of card stock.

I've heard that there aren't any craft stores where I'll be living in Italy (yea, big surprise). What am I going to do?
I'm not a fan of the "e-card." There's something much more personal and thoughtful about receiving a card in the mail.

Superbowl Sunday: Spinach Artichoke Dip

Sunday, February 6, 2011

Happy Superbowl Sunday everyone!
I have to admit, I'm not a pro-football fan, so I really don't care who wins.
The hubs and I are getting together with a group of people from his shop to watch the game, and I didn't want to show up to the shin-dig empty handed. So I decided to make Spinach Artichoke Dip. A great thing about this dip is that it can be made in advance, and just kept in the fridge until your ready to throw it in the oven (that's what I've done).

Ingredients:
9 oz artichoke hearts
9 oz frozen spinach
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese
1/4 cup shredded Monterrey Jack cheese\
1/4 cup part skim ricotta cheese
8 oz reduced fat cream cheese
2 tbsp lowfat mayo
1/2 tbsp lemon juice
1 clove garlic, minced
3/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
2 dashes Tabasco sauce (I was a bit generous with this)

Directions:
Defrost spinach and dry.
Preheat oven to 350.
Combine all ingredients EXCEPT Parm. cheese into a food processor.
Pulse or blend until mostly smooth, but leave some chunks for texture.
Pour mixture into casserole dish. Sprinkle top with Parm. cheese.
Bake for 20 minutes, until it just starts bubbling.
Remove and let cool for 10 minutes.

Enjoy! I hope everyone has a great time watching the game, I'll have to find some way to entertain myself :)

6 months

Thursday, February 3, 2011

We are halfway to our first anniversary :)
This past week has really made me appreciate what a truly wonderful husband that I have. Not that I didn't know it before, but sometimes with the hustle and bustle of day to day life we tend to forget those things.
He has been so amazing this past week. He's been taking wonderful care of me since I got my wisdom teeth pulled, which has not been an easy recovery for me. If I need anything he's happy to take care of it for me. Tuesday he spent the majority of the day sitting next to me on the floor of our bathroom while I got sick for hours
If that's not love, I don't know what is.
He came with me to my doctor appointment yesterday. I apparently have dry sockets, so the doctor put some weird medicine stuff over the holes and told me it would probably be another week until I'm back to normal.
I'm so thankful to have someone so amazing, who takes such good care of me.
I can't wait to see what the future holds for us. These past 6 months have been wonderful, and I have learned SO much.

Jacob, my Bug, I just want to let you know how much I truly appreciate you.

Stopping by to say hello

Tuesday, February 1, 2011

Sorry it's been a while since my last post. Things have been pretty quiet around the Cravinho house. Recovering from having my wisdom teeth pulled has been a much longer process than I anticipated. I'm still in a pretty substantial amount of pain, but I'm hoping to be back to myself by the weekend.
Valentine's day is just around the corner! I have some great crafts that I will share with you soon!
My husband and I are starting our own business, so that has been keeping me plenty busy lately. I don't want to get into too much detail about it, but hopefully as March approaches I will be able to share more.
3 more months until our move to Italy! I'm getting really anxious for it.
Well, that's what's going on in my life. I hope everyone is having a fantastic Tuesday!
