Next Week: ITALY!!

Monday, May 23, 2011

We leave for Italy next week.
YES, I can finally say that!!!
I have been waiting for 6 months to be able to say that.
I cannot believe how soon everything will be happening! I must say, I'm really excited.
Extremely excited.
People keep asking me if I'm scared, and honestly I'm not. My excitement level is far too high for that. I'm not even the least bit stressed.
After all, nothing can be that bad if your in Italy right? I'm looking at these next couple of years as a biiiiiig vacation.
I've been checking the AHRN website religiously. There are a few homes that I've added to our favorites. We really want to get a house, and not an apartment or town house. Everything we've been looking has been a 3 bed/2 bath. Hopefully we will actually like what we see when we get over there. As of now that website is my only tool.
Now, this might sound totally and completely ridiculous. But I'm worried about my blow dryer and straightening iron. I've heard that it's a better idea to just buy new ones over there, and to not try to use your American ones. Is that true? If so, does anyone have any suggestions?
I mean, a girl can take on anything once she is able to do her hair, right?
I'm also curious about weather. When I look online it seems like Aviano has been in the 80s pretty regularly.
As I write this post my mind is jumping all over the place, and I'm having a pretty impossible time trying to focus.
On that note, I will simply say to all my blogger friends in Italy: See you soon!!

Current Living Situation

Monday, May 16, 2011

We are back in Warner Robins for the week, but we are staying in TLF (temporary living facility) on base, which I must say is a much better experience than I had thought.
Everything with this PCS is a new experience for the both of us. I'm kind of glad it worked out that way. Neither of us know what to expect, and were learning together.
Somehow we ended up with a two bedroom place for the week. We walked in and the place was bigger than our apartment. Full kitchen, 3 TVs (one in each bedroom, and one in the living room), a DVD player, double sink bathroom. Not too shabby. Thanks Air Force.
While the hubs is running all over the place out-processing this week, I feel as though I will be able to keep myself pretty entertained. We have two cars here right now (our friend's who is deployed, and my dad's) so I have the freedom to go where I please.
I also had a feeling there would be a DVD player so I raided my father's insanely large movie collection while we were in Florida, and brought about 6 movies and a season of Home Improvement (remember that show? Tim Allen totally reminds me of my father which makes the show that much more enjoyable).
I'm running short on books though. I brought 4 with me and let the movers pack all the rest. Whops. I'm on book number 3 of the 4. Looks like I might need to make a trip to the bookstore, especially because I have a week here in Georgia, another 2 weeks in Florida, and then who knows how long we will be without our stuff in Italy.
Book suggestions anyone?
Last week I finished Water for Elephants (AMAZING! Best ending I have read in a LONG time) and Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld. I have American Wife which is also by Curtis Sittenfeld that I still need to read, and I'm going to order the Emily Giffen books that I have yet to read (Baby Proof and Heart of the Matter) for my super long plane ride.
So any suggestions for some great reads would be very much appreciated! I plan on making a trip to the used bookstore here in Warner Robins this week!

Greetings from Florida

Hello y'all!
I'll admit, it has been tough for me to keep up with my blog lately.
Instead of living in total chaos during the midst of this move, we have escaped to my parent's house in Florida, and oh how lovely it has been.
Seriously, I completely recommend a month long break from life before an overseas PCS.
The movers came to our place last week to pack up all of our belongings into 5 huge wooden crates that will be shipped across the ocean to our new home in Italia.
It was crazy. They packed these wooden crates FULL and then took another piece of wood and nailed the crate shut.

Apparently we had a lot more stuff than the movers had originally thought. That doesn't surprise me.
The hubs and I are now left with two suitcases each to our name. Trying to fit everything I would want for the next month or two into one large suitcase and one small suitcase was no easy feat.
I feel like I should be doing something now, to prepare for this life changing event. Perhaps I just feel like this because it is our first PCS, or maybe I will always feel this way with every move we endure.
All I know is that I am getting seriously anxious to get over to Italy. I can't wait to go house hunting.
I hope when we arrive things aren't too stressful. That is my personal goal, to stay calm during the craziness. I am by nature a total freak-out.
We have about 3 more weeks left here in the U.S.
I wonder if they will fly by or crawl by?

Mother's Day Brunch

Sunday, May 8, 2011

Happy Mother's Day!

I know it's been quite a while since I last updated, we have just been so busy with everything that's been going on.
We have moved out of our place in Georgia and are now in Florida visiting my family. I was especially excited to be able to spend Mother's Day with my mom this year, and even more thrilled when I learned that my brother would be there as well. I decided that I wanted to do something extra special.
I put together a Mother's Day brunch with the help of my husband and brother. Thankfully the whole thing ended up being a total success!
I set everything up outside next to the pool, and the weather was gorgeous.

Both my husband and brother are excellent cooks, so everyone chipped in and we ended up with a delicious brunch buffet.

There were waffles, roasted red potatoes, bacon, Italian sausage spinach and feta cheese frittata, strawberries, homemade donuts, and cupcakes.
I made carrot cake cupcakes with a cream cheese frosting. So yummy! I colored the icing pink and yellow, and piped it on for a more professional look. I found these Mother's Day printables for free here.

My Mom was more than excited about everything, and I think that everyone fully enjoyed the brunch.

Happy Mother's Day! I hope that all the mother's out there had a truly wonderful day!
