Gobble but don't wobble: Thanksgiving Guide

Yesterday I shared my plans for staying healthy and fit this holiday season, but today I want to talk about Thanksgiving in particular. 

How can you still enjoy Thanksgiving dinner without feeling like an overstuffed turkey afterwards?
I mentioned the 80/20 lifestyle and picking + choosing your indulgences yesterday, and that's exactly the method I'm going to use at Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow!

What does that look like?
You better believe I'm going to be getting my workout on Thanksgiving morning, this is one day that exercise really shouldn't be skipped! I also plan on enjoying my superfood shake for breakfast like usual, and making smart decisions food wise for the rest of the day leading up to the big dinner. This is what the 80/20 lifestyle is all about!  

What's your favorite thing on the menu? 
Are you a mashed potato obsessed? Does dessert do the trick for you? Will you be needing some wine to make it through the day?
Figure out where it is that you want to indulge, and plan accordingly. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, and I fully plan on enjoying it. I'm not going to to deprive myself of my favorites, but I will pick and choose what I'm going to enjoy.
For me, it's all about wine and dessert, so I'm going to be mindful of what I pack my plate with at dinnertime.

Below is a great example of how to stack your plate for Thanksgiving!
Load up on veggies and lean protein! You can still enjoy a little stuffing and potatoes, but try it in small amounts.

2016 Holiday Survival Plan

Ok you guys the holiday season is upon us, a time that is known for indulging in all kinds of high sugar, high calorie foods. This is also the time of year that most people end up packing on the pounds.
Did you know that the average American gains 7-10 pounds during the holiday season?
I don't know about you, but I've worked way too hard to let myself go during the next month.

So here's what I'm going to do:

1. Make weekly meal plans

2. Continue working out 5-6 days a week

3. Follow the 80/20 rule

4. Drink my daily superfoods

5. Pick and choose when + what to indulge in

6. Look to my challenge group for motivation + accountability!

In a nutshell, I'm going to continue doing what I normally do! It might take a bit more focus, determination and motivation but I know that I have all the tools I need to stay healthy during this holiday season. 

Meal Planning // I use Sundays as a way to gear up for my week, and that includes making a plan for all of my meals. I use a spreadsheet to keep myself organized, and every Sunday I sit down and make my game plan. I used to think this was unnecessary but I've learned over time that it is crucial for having a successful week. If I don't make a plan than I'm planning to fail!

Workouts // I can honestly say this is the first time in my ENTIRE life that I've been able to stick with an exercise program. Going to the gym, or any type of exercise that requires me to leave the house for that matter, is just not realistic for me. I was constantly setting myself up for failure with gym memberships or grand plans of going for a jog. What IS realistic for my lifestyle is working out in my own living room. Once I started programs like the 21 day fix I realized that I CAN commit to a workout program, it just needed to be something that fit into my life. As a mom of two littles working out at home is the only way for me. 

The 80/20 rule // I talk about the 80/20 rule a lot on my social media, but that's because I truly do live by it. I can't deprive myself of my favorite things and I won't do it. Life is too short. BUT I do try and make healthy choices (like clean eating and working out) 80% of the time so that when I do want a special treat or want to indulge in something I can. This allows me to live life but also stay healthy!

Daily superfood shake // Ok, I have to admit I wasn't sure about Shakeology at first. Once I tried it though and saw the positive impact it had on my health, I was hooked. I really can't say enough awesome stuff about this product, it is NOT just a protein shake. I drink my Shakeology every single day and it not only makes me feel fantastic, but it also helps curb those sugar cravings because it is so yummy. One shake has the equivalent of six salads, you can't beat that! My go to recipe is 1 scoop of cafe latte Shako, crushed ice, 1 cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk, 1 cup of spinach and some cinnamon. Yum! Pick + Choose // This sort of goes along with my 80/20 rule. Look, we can't have everything. Choose what is your absolute favorite and indulge in that instead of indulging in everything. Wine and dessert are my favorite, so on Thanksgiving I'm not going to go to town with everything on the table. Instead of a heaping plate of mashed potatoes, stuffing and a roll I'm going to save my indulging for some wine and pie.

Challenge group // I cannot say enough amazing things about challenge groups! Even though I am a coach and I run these groups, I also participate in them. They help keep me motivated and focused, and the nightly accountability check-in's are great for keeping me on track. My next challenge group starts on Monday Nov. 28th but I still have a couple of spots available! It will be a short challenge, only 3 weeks long and will end before Christmas. 21 Day Fix and breastfeeding

A lot of my challengers who do the 21 day fix program with me are new mamas, which means a lot of them are still breastfeeding.
One of the most common questions I am asked is if it's safe to do the program while breastfeeding?
My answer is yes.
In fact, I did 3 rounds of the 21 day fix, all while nursing my daughter. 
BUT you do need to tweak things a bit.
The nutrition part of the 21 day fix deals a lot with portion control, and you are allotted a certain amount of each "container" (basically a food group) each day. The amount you are allowed to have is basically determined by this equation:
- Current weight x 11 = baseline calories
- Add 400 to baseline calories = daily caloric need
- Subtract 750 from daily caloric need = calorie target

Now, I have often heard that all you have to do is add 500 to your calorie target if you are breastfeeding. Personally, I don't think that always works. Sometimes my nursing mama's can still fall into the lowest category. As a breastfeeding mom you should never eat below 1500 calories, and chances are you need more than that (especially if your babe is young exclusively nursing).

According to breastfeeding mamas need at least 1500-1800 calories per day, and most likely on the higher end of that. If you are starting the 21 day fix than that means you are exercising, and definitely need to be eating closer to 1800 calories! With all that being said, I always recommend that my nursing mothers never eat below the second portion category of 1500-1800 calories. I also advise that you should listen to your own body! If you feel like you need to eat more than those portion containers are allowing, then use your own judgement! As long as you are making healthy choices and sticking with the recommended foods, you will still see results.
I did, so I know you will too!

Now I am not a doctor, I am simply speaking from my own experience and that of my challengers. If you are at all concerned about starting a program while breastfeeding you should always consult your doctor.

Annabelle's Woodland Themed First Birthday

It's been well over a month since my sweet baby girl turned one, and I am just now getting around to sharing it with all of you! 

This birthday was a little bittersweet because I'm a little sad for my  babe to be growing up, and her daddy wasn't able to be there with us for it. 

I knew for months prior that I wanted to do a woodland theme. It seemed like the perfect thing for fall and where we live! 

I was so busy during the weeks leading up to the party that I was lucky it sort of all came together. I had been picking up stuff throughout the mont of September here and there (her actual birthday and party was October 1st), and definitely kept things low key.

I got the super cute Happy Birthday banner and coordinating party invitations from Prints for Events. They matched the party theme perfectly and I couldn't be happier with how they turned out!
I'm pretty sure the invites were one of my favorite things from the party.

I always prefer to do cupcakes for big events, it's just so much easier than a cake. I found the sparkley "Annabelle's 1st Birthday" and "One" cake toppers from Topper That custom cake toppers.
I used fake moss that I picked up from Michael's along with a faux wood slice and faux sparkly acorns to go along with our woodland theme.
I served pretzel "sticks" and a veggie platter to snack on, along with spiced apple cider and coffee. I also made leaf shaped sugar cookie cut outs that big brother helped me decorate the day before.

I used my rustic chalkboard for a month by month photo display of Annabelle, which was a big hit!
The "one" high chair banner was a super easy DIY that I threw together last minute, thanks to my Cricut. 

Throughout the whole party, and even now a month later, poor Jacob keeps asking when his birthday party is. We've got a few holidays to get through first little buddy! 

Even though Jake wasn't able to be there, Belle was surrounded by friends and family who all came to celebrate her very first birthday!
